Thirlmere Aqueduct
Thirlmere Aqueduct was built 112 years ago and runs for 72 miles underground from a man-made reservoir near Keswick, Cumbria and provides around a million homes in the North West and Greater Manchester areas with over 200 million litres of water every day. There are no pumps on the aqueduct and its takes just over a day to reach Manchester making its journey at around 4mph. This Victorian structure has never before been completely drained since it first opened in 1894.... Until now! The restoration carried out by the company forms part of an on-going £350m project where more than 800km of major water mains will be cleaned, inspected and repaired over the next eight years. Specialist inspection teams dropped in to the aqueduct at more than 70 locations between the north and the south of the region. This follows months of preparation to ensure that water is brought in from other sources to keep the taps flowing. A UU spokesman was quoted as saying “Water quality in the North West is now the best it’s ever been—and it’s down to projects like this one.”
